Open enrollment for individual and family health insurance is quickly approaching!
If you try to change your individual health insurance now, unless you have a qualifying event, you will not be able to except during the annual Open Enrollment period. During this time each year is when you can make a change to your health insurance coverage. You can either enroll in a new plan, make changes to your current plan or choose a plan with a different insurance company.
4 key dates you need to know:
November 15, 2014. Open Enrollment starts. Make an application for, keep, or improve your coverage.
December 15, 2014. Enroll through the 15th if you would like new coverage that starts on January 1, 2015. In case your plan's altering or you need to change plans, enroll through the 15th to prevent a lapse in coverage.
December 31, 2014. Coverage finishes for 2014 plans. Coverage for 2015 plans can begin the beginning of the month of January 2015.
February 15, 2015. This is actually the last day you are able to make an application for 2015 coverage prior to the completion of Open Enrollment. If you enroll on this date, your coverage will start on March 1, 2015.
If you would like to purchase insurance outside of Open Enrollment, you will have to be eligible for a Special Enrollment Period because of a special circumstance or change in your life such as; marriage, birth or adoption of a child, moving to an area outside of your current plan offerings, or loss of other health coverage.
